Emergency Quick Card
Where to listen, how to call for help, and your own station details in one place. Open it once while online and it keeps working without a signal.
Calling for Help
- Call 911 first if a phone works.
- Listen before you transmit. Check your local repeater and the nets below, then 146.520 simplex.
- Say "Break, break" or "Emergency traffic," then your call sign, and wait to be acknowledged.
- Give who, what, where and what help is needed. Speak slowly and spell names with phonetics.
- Ask a station that answers to relay your message if they can reach help and you can't.
- Write down times, call signs and messages as you go.
In a real emergency, when life or property is in immediate danger and normal communication isn't available, FCC rule §97.403 lets you use any means of radio communication to get help.
